Montesa Cota 25c: The first motorcycle of many

To talk about the Montesa Cota 25 is to talk about the first steps of a whole generation of trial riders. For many, it was literally their first motorcycle: light, small, easy to ride and with the unmistakable Montesa design, this little jewel marked a before and after in the history of children and youth motorcycling in Spain.

A motorcycle made for learning

The Montesa Cota 25 was presented in 1971 as a motorcycle designed exclusively for children, following Montesa's philosophy of bringing the world of trial to all audiences. It was an authentic mini trial, with design and technology inherited directly from its older sisters, but adapted to a child's scale.

Montesa's clear intention was to introduce the youngest riders to the world of trial. With a 2-stroke engine and a structure adapted to the youngest, this mini-trial was the gateway to the world of motorcycling for hundreds (if not thousands) of riders.

Its ease of handling and small size made it the perfect choice for children to learn the basics of balance, precision and control on two wheels. It wasn't just a mini bike: it was the beginning of a passion that many would keep for life.

It was a pioneering product in Europe, since at that time almost no other brand produced children's trial motorcycles as standard. Its success was immediate and its regular presence in school championships, exhibitions or learning circuits made it the first bike of many.

Models and evolution: the Cota 25A, 25B and 25C

-Montesa Cota 25A: the original model, with a very basic but functional design.

-Montesa Cota 25B: introduced aesthetic and mechanical improvements.

-Montesa Cota 25C: the most evolved version, with a design closer to that of the adult trials.

It was one of the few 49cc motorcycles with a manual clutch and gear shift, which allowed children to learn to ride “like grown-ups”.

-Many units were used by trial schools, such as Jaume Subirá's, and by local clubs to promote children's trials.

-Although thousands of units were manufactured, today it is difficult to find one in good original condition, as many were modified, painted or used intensively by children.

-In markets such as France and England, the Cota 25 had a discreet but highly valued presence among classic trial enthusiasts.
